SPRINGFIELD- State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is urging the federal government to study the noise impact at O’Hare International Airport.

Cullerton has continued to work diligently to alleviate problems in DuPage and Cook counties from heavy noise pollution. Planes taking off from O’Hare during early mornings and late evenings disturb residents in DuPage and Cook counties.

“We have continued to hear stories from residents describing the negative impact on their quality of life. Federal agencies need to quickly conduct a study to emphasis the connection between the air traffic noise and the environmental and human impact to help move this process forward,” said Cullerton.

Cullerton passed Senate Resolution 139 urging the Federal Aviation Administration and the United State Environmental Protection Agency to commission a study.

“As state officials, my colleagues and I have attempted to resolve this issue. However, we are at the point where we need federal assistance to find a solution to restore the quality of life for our communities,” said Cullerton. “This is an ongoing problem that needs to be resolved. The fact residents have had to suffer through these disturbances for so long is unacceptable.”

To emphasis the need for the study, Cullerton continues to circulate a petition to urge the federal government to issue a study to examine the environmental and human health impacts caused by O’Hare Airport.

The petition is available online at (Click here to sign the petition). There are multiple resources to report noise complaints on Cullerton’s site as well (Click here to submit a complaint).

He has been working on this issue with Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth and intends to present copies of the petition to U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk.

SR 139 passed the Senate with bipartisan support.
