Artist of the Month

Mike Hunnicutt PhotoTell us a little about your background. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small town in Texas but moved to Illinois for my job and immediately knew this is where I would live and raise my family. My wife and I have 3 adult children.  I have lived in Woodridge since 1987.

What artist inspires you and why?

I have been greatly inspired by abstract art from the 1950’s and pop art from the 1960’s.  Lately I have been inspired by the most recent work of the German artist Gerhard Richter.

What is your favorite medium to work in?

I work exclusively in acrylic paint on canvas.

Where can people view or purchase your work?

My work and be seen and I can be contacted via my web site:

How long have you been an artist or when did you start? Was there a single incident or moment when you realized this was your passion and if so, tell us about it?

I have appreciated and enjoyed visual arts my entire life but after retiring from a business career, I was able to devote my time and efforts to creating my own art.  I turned to the College of DuPage for painting classes under the instruction of art Professor Jennifer Hereth.  I discovered my latent artistic talent and began creating my own style.

JulyArtist1I do not use brushes like a typical painter. Instead, I use an unconventional array of scraping tools to smear paints across the canvas. I sometimes generate a 3-D effect by first painting a background layer of neon colors and then blend more layers and colors in the foreground. This technique creates depth and movement designed to invoke thoughts and emotions.

I design my pieces to be thought provoking or even perplexing to the viewer. I paint to create a sense of non-reality and I hope that anyone looking at my pieces will see the visual poetry within.

Do you have a Facebook, Twitter or website that features your work? If so, please list all.

I have a website, and can be found on Facebook.
