041013br0236State Senator Tom Cullerton joined students from his district as they visited Springfield on Wednesday. More than 140 seventh and eighth graders from Wood Dale Junior High came to the Capitol building with their teacher Joe Krause to learn firsthand how state government works.

As part of their tour, Cullerton invited the students in the Senate Chamber to explain the process of lawmaking. The students even got to sit in the members’ seats and learned about the voting process.

They also had the opportunity to visit the Illinois House.

These seventh and eighth graders have been studying state government in school and took this opportunity to ask the senator questions. Some students were curious about what one needs to do to become a senator and what classes they need to take in school.

“To become a senator, there aren’t any specific classes to take,” Cullerton said. “The main thing is to care for your community.”
