BLETSeveral new members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) visited State Senator Tom Cullerton in the Senate on Wednesday, March 20th.

These new members, some from Cullerton’s district, came to Springfield for training on safety, cleanliness of engine and working environment, sanitation, and also political education.

“I was proud to recognize them on the floor when they were in town,” Cullerton said.  “It’s great that they are here learning about the legislative process and had a chance to visit the Statehouse.”

Paul Piekarski, Chairman of the Illinois State Legislative Board, welcomed the group and referred to the training as a “reintroduction to civics 101”.

The BLET is the oldest railway union in the Western Hemisphere and about to celebrate their 150th anniversary in May.  After only accepting promoted locomotive engineers in its early years, now BLET includes trainmen and other rail employees in its membership.
