“The state funds higher education to educate our students, not to pay administrators for quitting their job.”

-    State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park)
051915 js 0211.resize2VILLA PARK- University of Illinois’ resigning Chancellor Phyllis Wise’s lavish $400,000 bonus is the latest example of bloated financial buyouts for public higher education administrators.
State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is outraged about the blatant disregard for tax dollars.
“In three years, my wife and I will be sending our oldest son to college. His tuition dollars should be used toward paying for his college education, not filling the pockets of overpaid administrators,” said Cullerton. “These types of actions make families reconsider sending their children to Illinois’ public community colleges and universities.”
Illinois college students are paying more than double the national average to attend a public four-year university.
“The state funds higher education to educate our students, not to pay administrators for quitting their job,” said Cullerton. “We have seen enough. This type of abuse illustrates what is wrong with our higher education systems. College administrators should be looking for ways to make college affordable for our children, not finding ways to collect a paycheck at the expense of their future.”

Cullerton is committed to reforming abuses at state community colleges and universities to keep institutions credible and costs affordable for students. He will continue to participate in the Senate’s Subcommittee on Executive Compensation to prevent a repeat of abuses of state dollars on their campus.
“I’ll continue to fight to end the misuse and abuse of taxpayer dollars,” said Cullerton.
