PHOTO Tom Cullerton advances legislation to eliminate office of lieutenant governorSPRINGFIELD- State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) advanced his initiative to save the state $1.6 million a year to help pay for social services such as the DuPage County Meals on Wheels program.

“This is a simple way to increase government efficiency and save vital taxpayer dollars,” Cullerton said. “While this may not solve all of our budget problems, I’m sure there are social service providers in my district and throughout Illinois that would appreciate this money.”

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 29 would eliminate the office of lieutenant governor. This move would save the state $1.6 million annually.

Currently, 45 states have an office with the title lieutenant governor, while 17 states elect the position separately. Similar to Illinois, 25 states elect a lieutenant governor on the same ticket as the governor

SJRCA 29 passed the Senate’s Executive Committee today with a bipartisan vote of 12-4.

In 2013, House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 18 was sponsored by former Republican Senator Darin M. LaHood and Representative David McSweeney. Cullerton was a co-sponsor of the legislation. The initiative passed the House with bipartisan support; however, did not advance in the Senate.

“This isn’t a new idea. In fact, this has been a bipartisan initiative,” Cullerton said. “It’s our duty to work together to explore every way we can save state dollars.”

Cullerton anticipates SJRCA 29 will be heard by the full Senate on Thursday, April 21.

If the amendment passes the Senate and House, voters will be given the opportunity to vote for the referendum in the 2016 General Election.
