“It’s our duty to protect our drinking water for the sake of our children and generations to come,”
- State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park)

tcullerton 053116SPRINGFIELD - Recent news reports have shown evidence that public water systems reveal lead levels exceeding federal standards.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed House Joint Resolution 153 which directs the Illinois Environmental Agency to conduct a study detailing lead in Illinois drinking water.

“It’s our duty to protect our drinking water for the sake of our children and generations to come,” Cullerton said. “We should use the situation in Flint, Michigan as a learning experience.”

Several communities in Illinois have detected lead in their drinking water. Recently, federal officials recommended that the City of Galesburg furnish bottled water or filters to residents affected by high levels of lead in their drinking water. Chicago has also seen a lead poisoning rate at least twice the national average and the rates are higher among minority children.

Research shows every dollar spent on lead poisoning prevention results in a lifetime of savings and decreased costs to taxpayers for health care and special education.

“The study will help us create an action plan to battle and prevent further lead poisoning in Illinois,” Cullerton said.  “This is a small step we can take to promote the effective and responsible use of tax payer dollars and resources.”

House Joint Resolution 153 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support. This measure is sponsored by Representative David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) in the House.
