SPRINGFIELD- Villa Park Democrat, State Senator Tom Cullerton’s first act in the 100th General Assembly was to institute new senate leadership term limits.
“New leadership means new ideas,” Cullerton said. “No one person should have that much power. It’s important for the Senate to have a rotation of fresh ideas to tackle problems.”
Cullerton adopted Senate Resolution 3, which limits the Senate President and Minority Leader to five terms apiece.
A poll released by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute found that more than 80 percent of voters support term limits on state lawmakers. The poll of 865 likely Illinois voters was released in October 2016.
“We are preventing the possibility for senate leadership to consolidate power,” Cullerton said. “As I talk to the people of my district, this is something they clearly support. I’m here to represent the people of DuPage County and hope the House does the same.”
This measure will go into effect immediately.
