02072018 RSSPRINGFIELD – State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) joined a group of bipartisan legislators to help institute swift and effective remedies at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy.

Cullerton joined House and Senate democrats and republicans in reiterating the General Assembly’s readiness to pass legislation to expedite the construction process to ensure the safety and well-being of the United States servicemen and women at the Quincy home.

“Gov. Bruce Rauner has forced our nation’s heroes to wait three years for a meaningful resolution to the Legionella crisis at the Quincy Home. This is simply unacceptable,” Cullerton said. “Now is the time for the governor’s administration to be proactive and take the necessary steps to move our veterans and their loved ones out of harm’s way.”

Last week’s bipartisan House and Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs adjourned without receiving a status update from the Illinois Director of Veterans Affairs Erica Jefferies and Director of Public Health Nirav Shah.

Cullerton said he still hopes the governor’s administration will work with the General Assembly to quickly fix the problem at the home.

“We have a long way to go to guarantee our veterans live out their golden years in safe environment,” Cullerton said. “If we all work together we can institute a real solution to eliminate the risk of Legionnaires’ disease indefinitely.”

Joining Cullerton as co-signers on the letter were Representative Linda Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Senator Sam McCann (R-Plainview) and Representative David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills).
