04052017CM0754 RSVILLA PARK – A new law championed by Villa Park Democrat Tom Cullerton will help make DuPage County government more efficient and no bigger than necessary.

According to DuPage County, Cullerton’s new law will help create at least $300,000 in annual taxpayer savings by allowing the county to merge its county board of election commissioners with the county clerk’s office.

“Consolidating redundant functions of government streamlines services and saves vital taxpayer dollars,” Cullerton said. “This new law will empower DuPage County residents to decide how their government works. This is a win for everyone.”

House Bill 5123, which was signed into law on Monday, will require an ordinance or resolution from the county board to dissolve the county board of election commissioners. Most election authorities are already run through the county clerk’s office, but DuPage is one of only two counties in Illinois with a county board of election commissioners.

Cullerton said the DuPage County Election Commission has had issues the last few elections, increasing the urgency of the measure.

“This new law will lead to lower property tax bills and more efficient local government,” Cullerton said.

The measure was supported by the DuPage County Board, the Better Government Association, the Metropolitan Planning Council and the city of Aurora.

“Senator Tom Cullerton has been a leader on consolidation issues that have saved the taxpayers of DuPage County millions," DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said.

In March, voters in DuPage approved a nonbinding referendum – with 56 percent in favor – to merge the DuPage County Election Commission with the DuPage County Clerk's Office.

House Bill 5123 will take effect Jan. 1, 2019.
