The incentive package encouraging Office Depot Inc. and international chemical distributor, Univar, to locate their corporate headquarters in Illinois was approved by a 43 to 10 vote in the Senate on Tuesday.

“This package is proof that Illinois is competitive and shows our determination to bring new jobs to our state,” Cullerton said.

The proposal, House Bill 3271, creates a tax credit based on the number of jobs kept in Naperville and new jobs brought into the state by the newly formed Office Depot Inc. The plan extends a similar package to Univar for bringing its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Downers Grove.

The new company is the result of a merger between OfficeMax and Office Depot. The new company’s board is currently deciding whether to locate its corporate headquarters in Naperville—the site of Office Max—or Boca Raton, Fla.—the location of Office Depot.

House Bill 3271 requires the Office Depot Inc. to keep 2,050 jobs in Naperville and bring an additional 200 administrative positions to the state. The company would also have to invest $150 million Naperville.

Univar would receive a tax credit if it brings 69 top administrative positions to Illinois and retain 100 existing employees. Univar is also weighing the possibility of bringing an additional 400 personnel to the state.

“Companies should see the direction the state is heading and realize the opportunities that Illinois offers,” Cullerton said.

The plan moves to the House for a vote as early as this afternoon.
