OfficeMaxAn incentive package encouraging the newly formed Office Depot Inc. to locate its corporate headquarters in Naperville passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday. State Senator Tom Cullerton, the plans sponsor, and executives from the newly formed company testified in favor of the plan.

The proposal, House Bill 3271, creates a tax credit based on the number of jobs kept in Naperville and new jobs brought into the state from the company formed by the recently merged OfficeMax and Office Depot. The two companies began a merger in February, recently received Federal Trade Commission approval and formed the new company Office Depot Inc. on Tuesday.

“Illinois has an outstanding business environment, a terrific talent pool and the perfect kind of infrastructure for a company like the new Office Depot Inc. to locate. This incentive is just a way of showing our commitment to being competitive and bringing new companies and new jobs to the state,” Cullerton said.

The board of Office Depot Inc. is currently deciding whether to locate its corporate headquarters in Naperville—the site of Office Max—or Boca Raton, Fla.—the location of Office Depot.

House Bill 3271 requires the new company to keep 2,050 jobs in Naperville and bring an additional 200 administrative positions to the state. The company would also have to invest $150 million Naperville.

“Chicago is a world city with access to [an international] airport, we have had success finding talent and we have [already] opened our tech center here,” said Ravi Saligram, Co-CEO of Office Depot Inc. “I respectfully and humbly ask that the committee pass this legislation.”

“This is a bipartisan effort to keep Illinois competitive and be proactive, bring a valuable business and even more valuable jobs to the state,” Cullerton said.

House Bill 3271 now moves to the full Senate for a vote as early as Thursday.
