schoolpensState Senator Tom Cullerton will serve on two newly created taskforces: The School Security and Standards Task Force and the Task Force on Civic Education, which were formed this year.

The School Security and Standards Task Force

"Sadly, the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, ongoing violence in some of our neighborhoods and the potential for other tragedy changed how we look at security in our schools," Cullerton said. "We need to make sure our schools and our children are safe and secure."

The School Security and Standards Task Force will study the safety and security of schools in the state, make recommendations to the Illinois State Board of Education and create minimum safety guidelines for schools.

The task force is made up of lawmakers, first responders, teachers, school administrators and security specialists.

Cullerton co-sponsored the law creating the school security task force.

Task Force on Civic Education
Currently in Illinois there is no requirement for schools to teach civics; instead, there is only an encouragement to include civics in the social studies curriculum.

The task force will review schools' existing civics programs, study other states' programs and make recommendations to lawmakers about how to promote responsible citizenship through education.

"If we get an early start teaching students about responsible citizenship, we will see a more active and engaged generation of students and citizens," Cullerton said.

The task force is made up of lawmakers, teachers, school administrators and other education officials.

Cullerton was the chief senate sponsored of the law creating this task force.
