fcien 48 A newly signed law requires schools to conduct school shooting drills with local law enforcement agencies. The new program is aimed at reducing response times and reviewing schools’ emergency response plans.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) co-sponsored the new law.

“Just like a fire drill or tornado drill, these drills will give schools and emergency responders a chance to find ways of protecting as many lives as possible,” Cullerton said. “In any emergency seconds matter. This law will make sure that no time is wasted when children’s lives are at stake.”

Unlike a fire or tornado drill, children are not required to be present during the drill. Along with shooting drills, the new law requires schools to also prepare for other types of incidents including hazardous material spills and bomb threats.
