The incentive package encouraging Office Depot Inc. and international chemical distributor, Univar, to locate their corporate headquarters in Illinois was approved by a 43 to 10 vote in the Senate on Tuesday.

“This package is proof that Illinois is competitive and shows our determination to bring new jobs to our state,” Cullerton said.

TCizzle120313Dear Friends,

Today, the General Assembly passed an unconstitutional pension reform proposal that I did not support.

Like the supporters of Senate Bill 1, I’m concerned about our state’s fiscal situation and inability to pay its bills on time. But I understand a law that’s declared unconstitutional saves no money.

Our state’s pension crisis was not created overnight and shouldn’t be resolved by a proposal that does not pass several critical tests in solving the state’s pension crisis. SB1 didn’t involve stakeholders directly impacted by these changes in negotiations and the constitutionality of this proposal is uncertain.

We cannot take away from the people who we have made promises to with a bill we know is not constitutional. The state needs to control its spending, including its pension spending. But it's unfair and immoral to go raiding retirees' savings to do it.

To hear my comments on the changes made to our state’s pension systems, click below. I appreciate all of the emails, phone calls and letters I have received from constituents across the district asking me to vote against pension reform and to fight for the rights of retirees. I have every intention of continuing to push for a more fair and equitable solution.

I will continue to keep you updated on further developments. As always, do not hesitate to contact my office or send me an email with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Senator Tom Cullerton

OfficeMaxAn incentive package encouraging the newly formed Office Depot Inc. to locate its corporate headquarters in Naperville passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday. State Senator Tom Cullerton, the plans sponsor, and executives from the newly formed company testified in favor of the plan.

The proposal, House Bill 3271, creates a tax credit based on the number of jobs kept in Naperville and new jobs brought into the state from the company formed by the recently merged OfficeMax and Office Depot. The two companies began a merger in February, recently received Federal Trade Commission approval and formed the new company Office Depot Inc. on Tuesday.

“Illinois has an outstanding business environment, a terrific talent pool and the perfect kind of infrastructure for a company like the new Office Depot Inc. to locate. This incentive is just a way of showing our commitment to being competitive and bringing new companies and new jobs to the state,” Cullerton said.

Cullerton1The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) hosted a reception for family members and supporters of three nonprofit organizations Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Danada House Atrium in Wheaton.

The reception recognized the hard work of Easter Seals, the Ray Graham Association and the Deicke Home.

"These are outstanding organizations that deserve extra recognition," Cullerton said. "The work that these groups do to improve the lives of the disabled is especially commendable."

The reception helped kick off the Forest Preserve District's largest special event of the year: the Danada Fall Festival, which featured equestrian shows, an art exhibit, food, crafts and other family friendly events.

"We need to follow the example of these organizations, create lasting partnerships and focus on improving the lives of our most vulnerable citizens," Cullerton said.
