SPRINGFIELD Twenty DuPage County schools will soon be able to make safety and security upgrades thanks to an Illinois Emergency Management Agency grant program.

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Grant Program awarded $1.6 million in grants aimed at improving school and student safety – covering 87 separate projects in DuPage County schools and colleges.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) applauded the award.

“If we have learned anything from tragic, violent school shootings, it is that protecting our children at school should be one of our highest priorities,” Cullerton said. “This funding gives schools the ability to be proactive and helps ensure the safety of our students.”

Governor Pat Quinn announced the grants last week.

“These projects will strengthen security at main entry points, providing school personnel with critical moments to alert law enforcement, activate plans to protect students and save lives,” Quinn said.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Veterans with permanent disabilities will have an easier time renewing their parking placards under a plan approved by the Senate on Wednesday.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) introduced the plan removing the requirement that Veteran's with permanent disabilities show evidence of their disability when reapplying for handicapped parking.

“If veterans have suffered a serious, permanent disability – if they were partially paralyzed or lost a limb serving this country – it is ridiculous to ask them to prove that disability every four years,” Cullerton said.

The plan, Senate Bill 3255, passed the Senate by a 53-0 vote. It now moves to the House.

Cullerton Capitol at your CornerVILLA PARK – State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) hosted three “Capitol at Your Corner” events this week where residents were free to ask him questions and raise concerns about local and state-wide issues.

“Face-to-face contact is still my favorite way to ensure that I continue my focus down in Springfield. I have an extremely large area to cover and many different concerns throughout the 23rd District. Having such a good turnout and so many people come by and chat is extremely helpful as we go into the final month of our legislative session,” Cullerton said.
