Cullerton AwardCHICAGO – A group representing the passenger rail industry presented State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) a legislative award during a lunch Wednesday promoting high-speed rail in Chicagoland.

The Midwest High Speed Rail Association presented Cullerton the award for calling attention to suburban rail congestion and his work to promote mass transit.

“More and more commuters rely on dependable, efficient service from Metra. Improving infrastructure and fixing rail-line bottlenecks reduces delays and speeds-up travel times in commuters’ every-day lives,” Cullerton said.

Rick Harnish, the executive director of the MHSRA, applauded Cullerton's initiative.

“Senator Cullerton understands the value of infrastructure investment in Metra for the entire region, not only for the tens of thousands of suburban commuters, but for drivers who have less traffic congestion to fight through. We appreciate his leadership,” Harnish said.

The two organizations presented the award during a lunch promoting the CrossRail Chicago program, which aims to expand and improve express train service throughout Chicago and the suburbs.

“I am honored by this award, and I’m committed to making affordable, high-speed rail transit a reality,” Cullerton said.

ELGIN – Elgin’s U-46 school board is set to discuss the creation of a specialized math and science charter school at its meeting Monday night. The district’s Charter School Evaluation Committee has been reviewing the Elgin Math and Science Academy Charter School’s proposal.

The proposal has raised concerns ranging from conflicts with possible sites for the school to compliance issues with state law and the financial burden of opening a new, exclusive school.

“Residents have already received at an almost 10 percent property tax hike this year. What’s worse is that their children wouldn’t be offered transportation to the school,” State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) said.

Based on the current proposal, only students living in Elgin would be provided school-funded transportation. Children accepted to the school who live outside the city limits would need to find their own way to school every day.

“I am in favor of a having a thoughtful discussion about this issue. Nonetheless, these costs would further unfairly raise taxes on residents in my district who already disproportionately fund the district – without affording them the full benefits of this school,” Cullerton said.

Illinois veterans with permanent disabilities will have an easier time renewing their parking placards under a plan waiting for approval by the governor.

I introduced Senate Bill 3255 to remove the requirement that veteran's with permanent disabilities must show proof of their disability every four years when reapplying for handicapped parking placards.

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth and I spoke with ABC 7 about this plan. Here is a link to the interview that aired yesterday.
