SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Senate voted Tuesday requiring high schools to train students in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator use.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) co-sponsored the plan that would add CPR and AED training to high school health classes.

“Every school has an AED but what good is it if someone dies because nobody knew how to use it? CPR and AED use saves lives and every student should know what to do in this kind of emergency,” Cullerton said.

Currently, CPR and AED training is not required as a part of health education, but certain school personnel have training and are certified.

Under this plan, parents who do not want their children to participate in this training could opt out of it.

The plan, House Bill 3724, was passed by a 48-4 vote. It previously passed the House in April, and it now goes to the governor’s desk for approval.

050814 dh 0102SPRINGFIELD – Students from across Illinois visited the Capitol last week to show off their work in science and technology. At Tech Day 2014, students from Ardmore Elementary School showcased their projects to legislators and others while relaying the importance of technology access in the classroom. The students project explored ways of using digital animation in education.

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) met with the students and discussed their work.

“The level of expertise that these students have is amazing. The importance of early, technology-based education is obvious, and the hard work they’re putting in now will absolutely pay off in the future,” Cullerton said.
