TC-SB1State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) released the following statement after the Senate voted down Senate Bill 1.

“For too many years, previous lawmakers have underfunded and ignored our state’s pension system. I agree that we must take action, but Senate Bill 1 was not the way to do it. We worked incredibly hard for a fair proposal earlier this year, and found that in Senate Bill 2404. This is now the second year in a row that the Senate has passed pension reform and the House has stood at a standstill, and not taken action on the measures we went to great lengths to agree upon. At minimum, the House should, and needs to take action on SB 2404, in the interest of the constituents we are here to represent.”

TC-5-28-13Senator Tom Cullerton issued the following statement after the Senate’s approval of HB1544. Cullerton was chief co-sponsor of this legislation, which seeks to revamp and better focus the state’s economic development efforts.

“Illinois is home to some of the most successful businesses in the world. But the state’s economic development efforts are stale. This plan is a much-needed revamping of the state’s strategy and will, for the first time, give real-life employers an actual say in developing policies to improve job creation and target communities that have struggled for too long.”

HB 1544 will help Illinois with creating and retaining jobs, attracting businesses and reducing unemployment by requiring the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to develop a new strategic economic development plan. As part of this effort, the DCEO will consult with business and local economic development organizations to develop an annual economic development plan to submit to the governor and the General Assembly.

TC-SchoolGangsSchool officials would be required by state law to report any weapons or gang activity to police, under legislation sponsored by state Sen. Tom Cullerton that the Illinois Senate approved Thursday.

“We cannot ignore signs of gang activity in schools,” said Cullerton, a Villa Park Democrat.  “We must protect our students by doing everything possible to keep them away from these influences.”

The legislation – HB 2768 – was approved 50 to 0. It now heads to Governor Pat Quinn’s desk and could soon be signed into law.
