As part of their tour, Cullerton invited the students in the Senate Chamber to explain the process of lawmaking. The students even got to sit in the members’ seats and learned about the voting process.

They also had the opportunity to visit the Illinois House.

T. Cullerton First BillWith more and more of the suburbs being paved and developed, a growing concern is what to do with the seemingly countless gallons of storm runoff pouring through suburban streets and flooding properties every year.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton, the former mayor of Villa Park, is attempting to make it easier for suburban communities to utilize environmental solutions that reduce and ideally use the problematic runoff.

Legislation sponsored by Cullerton was approved Thursday by the Illinois Senate on a vote of 55 to 0.

Cullerton’s legislation spells out that suburban communities have the ability to maintain so-called “green infrastructure” such as green roofs, rain gardens and other environmental alternatives to the traditional storm sewer network.
